Super Mario Bros. sequel officially named ‘Super Mario Galaxy Movie’

Nintendo reveals Super Mario Bros. sequel title as ‘Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, set for release in April 2026.

Nintendo and Universal have officially revealed the title of the highly anticipated sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The follow-up will be called The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on 3 April 2026.

The announcement came during a Nintendo Direct on Friday, timed just ahead of the 40th anniversary of the original Super Mario Bros. video game, first released on 13 September 1985. The new title takes direct inspiration from Super Mario Galaxy, the hit 2007 game that became one of the most beloved releases on the Nintendo Wii.

The first Super Mario Bros. Movie, released in April 2023, smashed box office records and pulled in $1.36 billion worldwide, making it the most successful video game adaptation ever and the fifth highest-grossing animated film of all time. Its success put even more attention on what a sequel might bring, and the choice to draw from the cosmic setting of Galaxy signals a potentially larger and more ambitious adventure for Mario, Luigi, and their friends.

While plot details have not yet been shared, the 2023 film featured an ensemble cast that included Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad. Charles Martinet, the longtime voice of Mario in the games before his retirement in 2023, also made a cameo appearance as Mario’s father. It has not yet been confirmed if the full cast will return for the sequel.

Beyond Mario, Nintendo is also pushing ahead with other cinematic projects. A Legend of Zelda film is currently slated for release in March 2027, directed by Wes Ball and starring Bo Bragason and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Zelda and Link.

For fans of Nintendo’s most famous plumber, the confirmation of the Super Mario Galaxy Movie sets the stage for one of 2026’s biggest animated releases.
