Andor’s creator ‘driven crazy’ by fans using its success against other Star Wars shows

Andor creator Tony Gilroy has expressed frustration over the way the show’s success is being used to fuel controversy within the Star Wars fandom.

Speaking on The Ringer-Verse podcast (via GamesRadar), Gilroy said he and the creative team were “driven crazy” by the tendency of some media and fans to pit Andor against other Star Wars series.

“Every time people—clickbait—try to draw controversy between us and the other shows, it drives us crazy,” Gilroy said.

Despite Andor being one of the most critically acclaimed Star Wars projects in recent years—praised for its mature tone, complex characters, and political storytelling—Gilroy cautioned against simply trying to copy its formula. “It would be very wrong to come in and try to slavishly reproduce [Andor]. There has to be a hook, a reason why you want to bring your game there.”

Gilroy also touched on a broader fan concern: Lucasfilm’s over-reliance on the Skywalker Saga. So far, only The Acolyte has ventured significantly outside that timeline. He urged the studio and other creators to explore the vast galaxy beyond familiar characters.

“There’s how many billions of beings in that galaxy? How many corners of it are unexplored?” Gilroy said. “There’s some things that [Lucasfilm] is building that are really unusual, and I think that lesson is being taken to heart.”

His advice to other storytellers: “Let your freak flag fly… and do what you do best.”
