Hafthor “The Mountain” Björnsson, best known for his role as Gregor Clegane in Game of Thrones, has once again broken the deadlift world record.
The 35-year-old Icelandic strongman lifted 510 kilograms (1,124 pounds) during the Strongman 2025 competition in Birmingham, surpassing his previous record of 505 kilograms (1,113 pounds).
Björnsson, already one of the most decorated athletes in the sport, previously claimed the title of World’s Strongest Man in 2018 and has consistently ranked among the top competitors worldwide. His latest feat not only secured him a new world record but also helped him capture victory in the overall Strongman event.
What surprised many fans was how effortlessly Björnsson appeared to complete the lift. In a vlog posted to his YouTube channel, he explained that 510 kilograms was a calculated attempt rather than his maximum capacity. “People have been asking me, if 510 is light, will you go heavier? And the honest answer is no,” he said, adding that he wanted to conserve his strength to finish the competition strong.
Björnsson noted that heavier lifts can put immense strain on the nervous system, potentially jeopardizing an athlete’s performance in subsequent events. By focusing on strategy rather than pushing beyond the record, he was able to dominate the competition and walk away with both the title and a historic lift.
The achievement further solidifies Hafthor Björnsson’s reputation as one of the strongest men in history, continuing his legacy in the world of strength sports.
