Netflix's latest documentary, Unknown Number: The High School Catfish, delves into the shocking true story of Kendra Licari, a mother from Beal City, Michigan, who spent over a year cyberbullying her 13-year-old daughter, Lauryn, and her boyfriend, Owen McKenny.
The harassment began in October 2020 with anonymous texts accusing Owen of infidelity and escalated over the next 15 months to daily threats and explicit messages, causing immense emotional distress for the teens.
Despite initial investigations, the true perpetrator remained unidentified until the FBI traced the messages back to Kendra, who had an IT background and had used apps to disguise her identity.
She confessed to the harassment, explaining that she had started the campaign to uncover the original bully but became consumed by the act.
In August 2024, Kendra pleaded guilty to stalking and related charges, receiving a 19-month prison sentence. She was released on parole shortly thereafter.
The case has drawn widespread attention to the dangers of cyberbullying and the complexities of parental relationships.
The documentary features interviews with Lauryn, who, despite the betrayal, expressed a desire for eventual reconciliation with her mother.
It also highlights the emotional toll on Lauryn and Owen and serves as a cautionary tale about the potential for abuse in digital spaces.
