Various future possibilities for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds have been discussed, including a two-hour movie option. Rebecca Romijn, who plays Number One, revealed that the show’s final run involved a bit of “negotiation” with Paramount. Initially, the idea was to conclude the series with a streaming movie rather than a traditional season.

Previous seasons of Strange New Worlds featured 10 episodes, but for the final run, that wasn’t on the table. Instead, showrunners were first offered a two-hour movie to wrap up the storylines. Romijn shared at the STLV: Trek to Vegas Convention, “Normally it was 10 episodes, but they offered us a two-hour movie. Akiva [Goldsman] and Henry [Alonso Myers] said we can’t wrap up these storylines in just two hours. So they got six episodes.”

Although Paramount’s decision to end the show earlier than many fans hoped was disappointing, the early notice allowed writers to prepare a proper conclusion — a luxury Strange New Worlds’ parent series, Star Trek: Discovery, didn’t have.

Production on the fourth season has wrapped and is set to air in 2026, with the fifth and final six-episode season expected to film next year. Romijn expressed gratitude for the chance to finish the storylines properly, saying, “Not all shows get to have that. Some end abruptly without warning. We feel lucky.”

By the end of the series, Strange New Worlds is expected to catch up chronologically with Star Trek: The Original Series. Fans remain hopeful some characters may continue in new projects.

Meanwhile, Paramount recently transformed its planned Section 31 spin-off into a streaming movie, which faced poor reception. Star Michelle Yeoh acknowledged, “There were some things we could have done better.”
