The Virginia State Medical Examiner’s Office has officially determined that 43-year-old Jessica Aber, who previously served as the US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, died from sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP), a natural cause, following years of managing epilepsy.
Aber was found unresponsive at her Alexandria home on March 22, 2025, just two months after resigning on Inauguration Day to allow for the incoming Trump administration.
Her family and colleagues had requested privacy, and the full autopsy reports remain confidential under Virginia’s privacy laws.
Colleagues described Aber as an exceptional leader and prosecutor. Erik Siebert, who succeeded her as US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, said her "professionalism, grace, and legal acumen set the standard," while Attorney General Pam Bondi expressed heartfelt condolences to Aber's family.
Aber's passing was met with deep sorrow across the legal community. Recognized for prosecuting major cases, including financial fraud, violent crime, and national security matters, she had earned widespread respect for her dedication and leadership.
