Zohran Mamdani participated in a bench press demonstration at Brooklyn's annual Men's Day event, attempting a 135-pound barbell.
The 33-year-old completed two assisted reps, crediting the spotter from the organization “500 Men Making a Difference” for support.
The event drew political attention, with some rivals referencing the video online. On social media, Mamdani was nicknamed “Mamscrawny” by a rival, and Mayor Eric Adams highlighted the demonstration in comparison to his own fitness and experience.
Adams posted, “64 vs 33. A lifetime of hard work vs. a silver spoon. The results speak for themselves,” and added, “The weight of the job is too heavy for ‘Mamscrawny.’ The only thing he can lift is your taxes.”

Independent candidate for mayor Andrew Cuomo also commented, writing, “It’s easy to talk, it’s hard to carry the burden,” quoting media coverage of the event.
Cuomo further stated, “This guy can’t bench his own body weight, let alone carry the weight of leading the most important city in the world,” without referencing his own bench press experience.

Mamdani additionally engaged with attendees through soccer demonstrations, highlighting his Ugandan heritage, and participating in other activities throughout the day.
The Men’s Day event, known for celebrating masculinity with outdoor gyms, entertainment, and car shows, offered a platform for political figures to interact with the public.
