A new indie video game has been released on Steam that recreates the famous Gloucestershire tradition of cheese rolling.

Simply titled Cheese Rolling, the game launched on August 20, and allows players to take part in the long-running competition virtually.

The real-world event, held annually since 1826 at Cooper’s Hill in Gloucestershire, sees competitors chase a wheel of cheese down a steep hill.

The tradition has become well known for its chaotic and often dangerous races, attracting both locals and international participants, including high-profile internet personalities.

The game adaptation provides players with the same experience without the physical risks. Developed by a solo creator with no previous Steam releases, Cheese Rolling includes both offline and online play.

Players can compete against computer-controlled opponents or join online lobbies with up to eight people racing simultaneously.

Gameplay involves racing downhill in pursuit of the cheese wheel. According to players, the experience is unpredictable, as control becomes increasingly difficult once the race begins.

The game also features proximity voice chat, allowing players to hear each other mid-race, enhancing the chaotic atmosphere.

In addition to the traditional grassy hillside, the game offers a variety of maps, including snow-covered mountains and underground pits.

Cosmetic content is minimal at launch, with only one purchasable skin currently available.

The release has drawn attention online due to its unusual premise and faithful adaptation of a unique British sporting event.

With its simple mechanics and fast-paced matches, the game has been described by fans as a light-hearted way to enjoy the tradition without travelling to Gloucestershire.

Cheese Rolling is now available on Steam.
