A devastating fire broke out at a filling station in Malir 15, killing two and injuring six others, most of them employees of the pump.
According to police, the blaze erupted suddenly and engulfed the entire petrol station within seconds, forcing people to run for safety. Some workers, however, were trapped inside as the flames rose sky-high. Rescue teams from KMC Fire Brigade and Rescue 1122 rushed to the site, along with SSP Malir Abdul Khaliq Pirzada.
Seven people were rushed to hospital with critical burn injuries. Later, one of them succumbed to his wounds. Several motorcycles parked at the pump were also destroyed.
Fire brigade officials stated that the alert was received at 4:18pm and the first unit reached by 4:20pm. The fire was controlled by 5:45pm after strenuous efforts lasting over an hour. Officials alleged that the incident was reported late, which aggravated the situation.
They further claimed that three people may have died in the blaze, while four sustained serious burns. However, police confirmed one fatality and six injuries. SHO Malir City Firasat Ali Shah said identification of the victims was not immediately possible.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, while cooling operations were carried out after the flames were extinguished.
