Kate Middleton and Prince William’s decision to relocate to Fort Lodge in Windsor Great Park has ignited controversy, with reports revealing that two families were forced to move out of their nearby cottages to accommodate the royal couple’s new “forever home.”
The Prince and Princess of Wales are preparing to settle into the eight-bedroom mansion, valued at £21 million, with their children Prince George, 12 Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7.
“They were told to move out. I guess they were given somewhere else, but they were told they had to move,” a source told the Daily Mail. “Those houses are very close to the lodge, so they’re not going to want any Tom, Dick or Harry living in those houses if there are going to be royals there.”
Despite the move into similar or better accommodation being funded privately by William and Kate, with no additional cost to taxpayers, critics argue the decision reflects the privilege of the monarchy at a time when housing concerns are a pressing issue across the UK.
The move comes during a sensitive time for the Princess of Wales, who has spoken openly about her battle with cancer. During a hospital visit last month, she admitted: “Treatment’s done, then it’s like, ‘I can crack on, get back to normal,’ but actually [that’s not the case].”
The couple are said to view the move as a fresh start while remaining within Windsor, which has become their established base.
