Simpson dies aged 89


News Desk: Former Australia Test captain and coach Bob Simpson has died aged 89. Simpson played 62 Tests for Australia between 1957 and 1978, scoring 4,869 runs - including 10 centuries - at an average of 46.81. He also took 71 wickets with his leg spin and was renowned as one of the best slip fielders in the game. After initially retiring from playing in 1968, Simpson made an extraordinary comeback as Test captain in 1978 at the age of 41, after several Australian players joined the breakaway World Series Cricket competition.

'The Rocket', who will now face Neil Robertson in Saturday's final, then repeated the feat in the seventh frame, again knocking in 15 reds with 15 blacks before dispatching all the colours.

With regular white-ball captain Harry Brook and England's other all-format players rested, the leadership for three T20s in Dublin has been handed to all-rounder Bethell, who has had limited playing time this summer. Monty Bowden was 23 years and 144 days old when he led England in a Test against South Africa in 1889, and to date he remains the youngest man to have captained England in an international. "It was obviously a great news to hear," Bethell told BBC. "The feeling was that of pride at first. It's not really sunk in yet. It's only been a few hours.

MacIntyre leads at BMW Champ
NEWS DESK: Robert MacIntyre shot a six-under 64 to open up a five-stroke lead in the second round of the BMW Championship in Maryland. The Scot, who led by three at the start of play, delivered a bogey-free card that contained six birdies to sit at 14 under overall. World number one Scottie Scheffler, on nine under, is MacIntyre's closest challenger,. The American managed a five-under 65 on Friday. "I've played beautifully the last two days," said MacIntyre. "Yesterday the putter was on fire. Today I felt like my iron play was exceptional. But I've been putting in the work the last couple of weeks to improve on what I was doing since the Wyndham."

Liverpool sign Leoni
NEWS DESK: Liverpool have signed 18-year-old defender Giovanni Leoni from Italian side Parma for a fee of £26m plus add-ons. Leoni, who Reds boss Arne Slot confirmed the club had agreed a deal for earlier this week, has signed a contract until 2031. The Italy Under-19s centre-back began his career at Padova and had a short spell at Sampdoria before joining Parma last summer. Leoni played 17 games in his first campaign in Serie A last season, attracting interest from both Milan clubs, but has opted for a move abroad. He said it was "not possible to say no" to Liverpool.

Salford call off Wakefield game
News Desk: Salford's Super League game against Wakefield on Sunday has been called off because of "significant" welfare concerns after discussions with the Rugby Football League. The troubled Red Devils have "reluctantly" decided to cancel the match after being beaten 80-6 at Hull FC in a game where five players made their debuts for the club. With most of the team's senior professionals leaving this season because of their financial issues, Salford have had to rely on loanees from other Super League teams. A club statement, external said that of the 17 players available for Sunday's game, only two had appeared at Super League level in the past 12 months. The RFL board, in line with its operational rules, will now decide on the outcome of the fixture next week.

Bournemouth target Doak
NEWS DESK: Bournemouth have opened talks to sign Scotland winger Ben Doak from Liverpool. The Reds want £25m for the 19-year-old, who is expected to be left out of their squad for Friday's Premier League season opener against Bournemouth. Doak has been a target for other Premier League clubs and Portuguese side Porto, but the Cherries are considered the frontrunners to sign him, according to multiple sources involved in the deal. The forward, who has six caps for Scotland, spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough, scoring three times and recording seven assists in 24 matches. He has played just 10 times for Liverpool since joining from Celtic in 2022.

Guardiola has shown a desire to keep the 21-year-old with City. However, it's usually club policy to let players decide about their future. City manager said that if Tottenham or any other club want a player, it is fair, but he also showed a desire to retain the Brazilian with the squad.
