Disney Branded Television has officially greenlit Coven Academy, a supernatural teen dramedy from Tim Federle, the creator of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. The new single-camera series is set to premiere next year on both Disney Channel and Disney+.
Set in the vibrant and mystical city of New Orleans, Coven Academy follows three teenage witches-in-training who are bound by destiny to protect their city from ancient supernatural threats. According to the official synopsis, the trio must unravel dark secrets, master unpredictable magic, face off against rival students—and still navigate the emotional rollercoaster of growing up.
The series features Malina Pauli Weissman (A Series of Unfortunate Events) as Briar and Tiffani Thiessen (White Collar, 90210) as Miss Graves. The ensemble also includes Malachi Barton (Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires) as Jake, Louis Thresher (Boarders) as Ollie, Jordan Leftwich (Family Switch) as Sasha, and Ora Duplass (Their Town) as Tegan.
Recurring guest stars include Brendon Tremblay (Descendants: Wicked Wonderland) as Alexander, Swayam Bhatia (Zombies 4) as McKenna, and Keegan Connor Tracy (Once Upon a Time) as Tamora.
“I pitched Coven Academy as a love letter to the YA shows I adored growing up,” Federle said in a statement. “I’m excited to bring this original story to life alongside my longtime partners at Disney and a truly magical cast and crew.”
Disney Branded Television president Ayo Davis added, “Coven Academy blends supernatural intrigue with relatable themes of friendship, self-discovery, and teen challenges. Under Tim’s visionary leadership, this show continues our tradition of telling stories that resonate with today’s youth.”
The show is part of Federle’s renewed overall deal with Disney Branded Television. He also serves as executive producer on the upcoming Vampirina: Teenage Vampire series, debuting September 12, and is currently directing the sequel to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion and writing the stage musical adaptation of The Greatest Showman.
Federle wrote, directed, and executive produced the Coven Academy pilot alongside Kimberly McCullough and Bronwyn North-Reist of Chorus Boy Productions.
