The Punjab Home Department has decided to launch a crackdown to curb begging and related crimes.
According to sources in the department, a committee has been formed to crack down on beggary, with Punjab Social Welfare Secretary Javed Akhtar Mahmood as its head.
The deputy inspector general of Special Branch, managing director of the Safe Cities Authority and the city traffic officer will be members of the committee along with the social welfare DG, and additional secretaries of the home and prosecution departments.
Representatives of the Child Protection Bureau and Federal Investigation Agency will also be included in the committee.
The committee will give suggestions within 15 days to eliminate beggary from the province.
The Anti-Begging Committee will meet in the home department on Monday.
The home department had set up beggary barracks in every jail across the province in February, increasing the total capacity to 10,000 inmates with spaces for women and children as well.
In Lahore's two jails, the department has designated barracks to keep 1,000 beggars while others will be accommodated in the prisons of Kasur, Sheikhpura, Gujranwala, Multan, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Bahawalpur and Narowal.
