RAWALPINDI:

The Pirwadhai General Bus Stand, established during the Bhutto era, has been upgraded by the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC) with modern facilities.

A computerised boom barrier system has been installed at the entrance to regulate public transport entry.

Installed at a cost of Rs30 million, the new digital system verifies multiple credentials, including vehicle fitness certificates, route permits, token payments, and ownership documents. Only vehicles that pass all checks are granted access to the terminal.

According to details, vehicles arriving from across the country must now undergo thorough scanning before entering the premises.

This system, developed in collaboration with the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), ensures that only compliant vehicles are permitted to operate within the bus terminal.

Driver's licenses and excise token records are also verified automatically.

Officials claim the system not only ensures the safety of passengers through verified vehicle fitness but also helps reduce environmental pollution caused by unregulated public transport.

The upgrade includes improved passenger amenities, such as clean waiting areas, prayer spaces, restrooms, and a robust security system equipped with CCTV surveillance and police presence.
