Corey Adams, an 18-year-old freshman defensive lineman at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), was fatally shot in Cordova, Tennessee, a suburb of Memphis, on Saturday night.
Adams, who had recently enrolled early to participate in winter football practice, was found critically wounded inside a vehicle near a residence on Fern Glade Cove at approximately 10:14 p.m.
Deputies from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and administered emergency care before Adams was pronounced dead by the county’s fire department.
In addition to Adams, four other adult males were shot during the incident. They were transported to nearby hospitals and are reportedly in stable condition.
A native of New Orleans and standout athlete from Edna Karr High School, Adams was known for his leadership on and off the field.
He had received all-state honors and had been widely regarded as a promising recruit in the Southeastern Conference.
The University of Mississippi issued a statement expressing its devastation and extended condolences to Adams' family.
Edna Karr High School also released a tribute, remembering Adams as a friend, teammate, and dedicated student.
Authorities have launched an ongoing homicide investigation, but no arrests have been made at this time.
