Delayed arrest in rape case sparks outcry

The arrest was made only after the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) took notice of the delay

ISLAMABAD:

Karachi Company police have arrested a suspect in a rape case, five days after he allegedly fled the scene after committing the crime.

A case was registered against the accused on July 13 for the alleged sexual assault of a woman.

Despite the victim's reported identification of the suspect, police initially failed to apprehend him. The arrest was made only after the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) took notice of the delay.

Sources said that in a previous case, police also failed to arrest the suspect in the murder of a young student from the International Islamic University Islamabad, who was shot and killed inside her university hostel.

Despite the victim's family providing a video recording of the accused in time, police were unable to act for several months.

Following a protest by the Aurat Foundation outside the National Press Club against police inaction, law enforcement authorities announced the suspect's arrest the same day.

They revealed that the alleged killer was a professional thief previously arrested in motorcycle theft and other criminal cases.
