BALOCHISTAN:

Two policemen were martyred and two others injured after unidentified gunmen opened fire on a Balochistan Constabulary convoy in Mastung district on Friday, according to the provincial government spokesperson.

Balochistan government spokesperson Shahid Rind said the police convoy was travelling from Kalat to Quetta when it came under attack near the National Highway. Acting Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Abdul Razzaq and Constable Raza Muhammad Jam were martyred in the incident, while Constable Taj Muhammad and Constable Khursheed Ahmed sustained injuries.

The bodies and injured personnel were transported to Quetta by helicopter.

Rind said security forces had launched a formal investigation and that efforts were underway to trace and apprehend the attackers.

“There has been a noticeable increase in attacks targeting security forces in recent months,” he added.

In April, a similar attack in Mastung’s Dasht area resulted in the martyrdom of three policemen and injuries to over a dozen others. Security in sensitive areas has since been heightened.

In the aftermath of Friday’s attack, security was tightened along the Quetta-Karachi National Highway. A large contingent of police and other law enforcement personnel reached the scene, cordoned off the area, and launched a search operation to locate those responsible.
