LAHORE:

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has approached Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) to mediate with the federal government for the release of its incarcerated founding chairman, Imran Khan.

The confirmation came from JI Ameer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, who disclosed that senior PTI leaders had reached out to him some time ago, requesting the party to facilitate dialogue with the government.

According to Hafiz Naeem, Jamaat-e-Islami made it clear that any such mediation would only be possible if PTI formally mandates JI to lead these talks on its behalf.

"We convened a party meeting and decided that if PTI provides a clear mandate and remains firm on its position, we are ready to facilitate discussions with the government," he said.

He further emphasized that the country is passing through a critical juncture and all political stakeholders must work together to move Pakistan forward.

"We have made it clear that mediation is only possible if both sides come with unambiguous positions. We will not be part of any process marred by ambiguity," Hafiz Naeem added.

JI Deputy Ameer Liaqat Baloch also confirmed that PTI leaders, including Barrister Gohar Khan, Senator Azam Swati and Ali Amin Gandapur, had contacted him in February 2025. He revealed that the discussions at that time pertained to government formation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, to which JI had responded positively.

It is noteworthy that PTI launched a 90-day nationwide protest campaign on July 13, calling for the release of Imran Khan. Meanwhile, the federal government has announced the formation of a new security force, a move that has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties.

Political analysts suggest that successful mediation by Jamaat-e-Islami could prove pivotal in breaking the prevailing political deadlock in the country.
