In a major medical breakthrough, a first-of-its-kind brain tumour surgery was successfully performed for the first time at the Abbottabad District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital. The procedure was carried out by young gold medalist Dr Shah Khalid, who utilised advanced surgical techniques and cutting-edge technology to achieve the feat.
According to available details, the patient — a 33-year-old resident of Mansehra who had recently returned from Dubai — was diagnosed with a brain tumour after undergoing a series of diagnostic tests.
Surgery was deemed essential, but the lack of neuro-navigation equipment in the province posed a significant challenge.
Dr Shah Khalid, a graduate of Aga Khan Hospital in Karachi, arranged for a neuro-navigation machine to be brought in from Lahore. With the help of specialised anaesthesia techniques and state-of-the-art equipment, he successfully removed 95pc of the tumour in a three-hour operation. The remaining 5pc will be treated with radiation therapy.
"This surgery was a huge challenge," said Dr Khalid in a media briefing. "Even a slight error could have resulted in permanent paralysis. Administering anaesthesia only to the brain while keeping the body conscious was a delicate task I was trained to handle. Thankfully, the surgery was successful, and the patient is recovering well."
Dr Khalid also announced the establishment of a dedicated neuro unit at DHQ Abbottabad, offering comprehensive treatment for neurological conditions. "I came from Aga Khan Hospital Karachi to serve my region, and I remain committed to this mission," he added.
