Warner Bros has launched a creative viral campaign to build anticipation for the upcoming Mortal Kombat II movie, releasing a teaser for a fake in-universe action film titled Uncaged Fury.

The promo features Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, the iconic martial arts movie star from the Mortal Kombat franchise.

The teaser showcases Cage’s over-the-top, action-packed persona in a fictional film where he takes down a gang of thugs after they mess with his beloved sunglasses. In a nod to his exaggerated ego, the trailer teases, “The F stands for… Fantastically handsome.” This clever viral effort also includes official posters and a website for the fictional movie, blurring the lines between the Mortal Kombat universe and reality.

Ahead of the actual Mortal Kombat II trailer, Warner Bros mailed promotional boxes to select fans, containing Johnny Cage-branded sunglasses and a DVD of Uncaged Fury. They even created a fake IMDb page and references to other made-up films like Bonnie & Cage, further building the character’s mythology.

Directed by Simon McQuoid and written by Jeremy Slater, Mortal Kombat II serves as the sequel to the 2021 reboot. The new film continues the battle between Earthrealm and Outworld, with Cole Young returning to rally Earth’s champions. The film hits theaters nationwide on October 24, 2025.

This unique marketing strategy has impressed fans, with many praising the immersive world-building. With the official trailer dropping tomorrow, anticipation for Mortal Kombat II is ramping up across the gaming and film communities.
