In a step towards urban uplift and sustainable energy, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has initiated the solarisation of key roads across the city. Mayor Murtaza Wahab has set a deadline of 30 September, 2025, for the illumination of major city arteries using solar-powered streetlights.
The project, part of KMC's broader green energy initiative, includes the solarisation of Sharae Faisal, Marine Drive (Clifton), Shahrah-e-Iran, and Shahrah-e-Firdous. The procurement process for the project has been completed, with a consignment of over 1,000 solar poles and lights expected to arrive in Karachi by the second week of August.
During a high-level meeting, and in regards to the project, the mayor stated "this initiative will not only improve public lighting but will significantly reduce electricity costs and provide an environmentally friendly solution with a five-year post-installation operation and maintenance plan." Mayor Wahab issued clear instructions to avoid any delays and warned of strict action in case of non-compliance with the set deadline.
