A speeding passenger coach lost control and overturned on Shaheed-e-Millat Expressway, leaving more than 13 passengers injured, while the driver fled the scene. Reportedly, the incident occurred near Iqra University while the Bilal Coach minibus was traveling from Qayyumabad towards the Baloch Colony Bridge.
The coach was speeding when the driver lost control and the vehicle overturned, leaving the passengers, including two women, injured.
The victims were shifted to Jinnah Hospital for medical aid, and were identified as 63-year-old Muhammad Safdar, 60-year-old Safdar, 45-year-old Latif and Abdul Qayyum, 40-year-old Najam, Kamran, and Yaqoob, 35-year-old Ghulam, Bilal, and Ganga, 32-year-old Sobia, 30-year-old Rajan, and 27-year-old Sifat. Several injured passengers left for private medical treatment.
As per traffic police, the accident occurred due to a broken tie rod on the coach, the driver of which fled and is considered responsible for the accident.
Meanwhile, a man who was a passenger on the coach told The Express Tribune that the accident occurred due to the coach driver's reckless driving. He alleged that it was the driver's scheduled token time, so he was overtaking vehicles in a dangerous manner. The witness added that he travels on the same coach every day for work, and that this kind of driving has become a norm, with coaches often running over motorcyclists and driving carelessly.
Further, the man noted that despite dozens of traffic police officers and officials standing at Qayyumabad Chowrangi, watching these coaches, no action has been taken against the smoke-emitting, poorly maintained passenger buses.
