Tens of thousands of bikers gathered at Five Star Roundabout in North Nazimabad on Sunday, under the banner of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), in protest against the web of corruption hatched in the name of new number plates. JI Karachi Ameer Monem Zafar Khan led the rally to Saddar.
People from all walks of life, and the youth in particular, participated in the rally, chanting slogans against the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) government.
The protesters argued that the government was aiming to raise more than Rs7 billion through an order to replace number plates, when millions of motorists would pay the price for the decision, despite the fact that they had made payments against the existing number plates as per the government approved design. They claimed that, in the recent past, citizens have been humiliated on every city corner, having their vehicles impounded, or being forced to pay bribes to avoid the fate.
In his speech at Fresco Roundabout in Saddar, Khan stated that the government failed in discharging its primary responsibilities, including the security of life and the provision of basic necessities, including clean water and steady power supply.
He argued that citizens pay the lion's share of taxation, yet remain deprived of their due share in resources, or even the basic right to live with dignity and respect.
