Rescue 1122 is making use of modern technology to help identify people buried beneath the rubble of the collapsed building in Lyari's Baghdadi area. This equipment includes life detection devices capable of sensing human heartbeat and movement, along with other modern tools to aid in the search and rescue operation.
Deputy Commander Rescue 1122 Sindh, Hammad Qureshi, told The Express Tribune that in any structural collapse, the top priority is to safely locate and extract any survivors. For this purpose, highly trained Urban Rescue Unit personnel have been deployed for the Lyari tragedy, with over 100 team members taking part in the rescue operation. Qureshi explained that the Urban Rescue Unit is a specialised Rescue 1122 wing, trained specifically to detect and rescue individuals trapped beneath debris.
In the Lyari operation, the team is using life detectors equipped with sensors that can identify heartbeat or faint sounds under rubble. These systems, combined with thermal imaging cameras and ground-penetrating radar, help confirm signs of life. Modern cutting tools and high-powered drills, including battery-operated hydraulic speed cutters, are also being used to break through debris without harming those possibly trapped below.
