Marisa Abela is stepping into a legendary world of sword fights and immortals. The Industry star has officially joined the cast of Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming Highlander reboot, joining previously announced leads Henry Cavill and Russell Crowe.
The film will be directed by John Wick helmer Chad Stahelski, with a script from John Wick: Chapter 4 co-writer Michael Finch. Cavill is set to take on the iconic role of Connor MacLeod, while Crowe will portray Ramirez, originally played by Sir Sean Connery in the 1986 classic. Abela's role is also immortal, though her character's name and storyline remain under wraps.
The new Highlander is being produced by United Artists’ Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt, along with Neal H. Moritz and Josh Davis of Davis Panzer Productions. Stahelski’s 87Eleven Entertainment and Louise Rosner are also on board to produce. With UA now holding the full rights to the original film, there’s potential for a broader Highlander universe, including a possible series.
The original 1986 film followed immortal warriors across centuries, culminating in a present-day battle. It became a cult hit, spawning sequels and a popular television series.
Abela is fresh off a BAFTA TV Award win for her performance in season 3 of Industry. She also earned acclaim for her portrayal of Amy Winehouse in Back to Black, and recently starred in Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag opposite Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett.
With such a powerhouse cast and creative team, the Highlander reboot is shaping up to be one of Amazon’s most anticipated projects.
