Twelve injured after two buses collide at Port Authority Terminal in US
A collision between two buses at Manhattan’s Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York, US on Wednesday during early rush hour left 12 people injured and caused major travel disruptions across the region. The incident occurred in an inbound bus lane leading from the Lincoln Tunnel.
According to the Fire Department of New York, one bus struck the rear of another, blocking the lane and backing up traffic for several blocks. New Jersey Transit confirmed the closure of of the Port Authority on X.
New York Port Authority is closed due a multi bus accident. NJ TRANSIT bus service traveling to and from the New York Port Authority Bus Terminal is being diverted to Secaucus Junction, Newark Penn Station and Hoboken Terminal.
Twelve passengers sustained non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.
One of the bus drivers, who suffered moderate injuries, had to be freed from the vehicle by emergency personnel using specialised rescue equipment, as per Eyewitness News.
"It required some extrication, meaning they had to use some equipment to free the patient," said Deputy Chief Jason Saffon of FDNY EMS. He noted that access to the crash site was initially hampered by heavy traffic on the ramp.
“We had some difficulty getting up the ramp, because it backed traffic up behind it,” Saffon told reporters. “But we worked with the Port Authority Police to open up the exit ramp, allowing ambulances to reach the scene.”
Following the crash, NJ Transit diverted buses to Secaucus Junction, Newark Penn Station, and Hoboken Terminal.
Passengers were advised that NJT bus tickets and passes would be cross-honoured by NJT rail and PATH trains at Hoboken, Newark Penn Station and 33rd Street in Manhattan.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash. No further details were immediately released.
