In the aftermath of the Swat tragedy, the provincial government may have constituted an inquiry committee, but the people of Swat are once again demanding that all those responsible be brought to justice.
According to local elders and social activists, although a protective track was built along the Swat River, a local contractor allegedly diverted the river's flow, which caused a breach in the riverbank. Locals have held both the irrigation department and the contractor accountable and have urged the government to take legal action against them.
Residents of the area have appealed to the provincial government and all relevant institutions to ensure the strictest punishment for those found guilty in the incident.
Sources say that despite billions of rupees spent by the government on building protective embankments along the Swat River, the river's course was illegally altered in several places. This resulted in dangerous breaches that ultimately hindered rescue efforts and put tourists' lives at risk.
Repeated attempts were made to contact the Minister for Irrigation for a comment, but his phone remained switched off.
