Director Joseph Kosinski has revealed that Formula One gave surprising approval for the use of F1 as the official title of his upcoming Brad Pitt-led racing film.

In a recent interview with GQ, Kosinski—best known for Top Gun: Maverick—shared his initial doubts that the global racing organization would allow the use of its brand directly in the movie title.

“I was actually surprised how open they were,” Kosinski said. “I thought it would be impossible to name the movie F1.”

Starring Brad Pitt as veteran driver Sonny Hayes, the film follows his return to the world of Formula One racing, guided by his old friend Ruben Cervantes. Formula One initially expressed concerns over the story’s portrayal of the sport. However, once reassured that the movie’s conflict was entirely character-driven and would not villainize any real-world racing teams, the organization became a full supporter of the production.

The partnership between the filmmakers and Formula One allowed the use of real F1 cars and tracks, adding authenticity to the film. Kosinski likened the branding success of F1 to titles like Barbie and The LEGO Movie, which also relied on real-world intellectual property while delivering strong standalone stories.

Formula One’s approval of the F1 title signals their confidence in the movie’s respectful and accurate portrayal of the sport. The film is set to debut with high expectations, as fans anticipate a blend of Hollywood storytelling and genuine motorsport realism.
