Karachi has experienced first spell of monsoon rains, accompanied by thunder and lightning, with the rainfall expected to continue intermittently until Sunday, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The monsoon system, after affecting parts of Sindh, entered Karachi earlier than expected. Meteorologists had initially predicted the system would reach Karachi on Friday, with rainfall possibly starting late in the evening. However, the system accelerated, bringing rain earlier than anticipated.

The rains began in the M-9 area, quickly spreading across various parts of Karachi, including Gulshan-e-Maymar, Gulshan, Gulistan-e-Johar, Shah Faisal, Korangi, Landhi, Malir, Bin Qasim, Hassan Square, Gharibabad, Liaquatabad, Federal B Area, Jamshed Road, Saddar, Korangi, Orangi, North Nazimabad, New Karachi, and Surjani.

In addition, areas like Defence, Clifton, Baldia, Sher Shah, and Kiamari also saw torrential downpours.

According to meteorologists, the rain will continue intermittently until Sunday, with the possibility of urban flooding, especially in low-lying areas.

Residents of Karachi have been advised to stay indoors during the heavy rainfall and avoid areas with accumulated water or potential flooding. Authorities also caution against touching electrical poles, appliances, or switchboards during the storm.

As a result of the rain, over 300 feeders in Karachi tripped, causing power outages in several parts of the city. Areas such as Surjani Town, North Nazimabad, North Karachi, Federal B Area, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Johar, PIB Colony, Liaquatabad, and others were left without electricity.
