The Sugar Advisory Board on Monday approved the import of 500,000 tons of sugar to control the supply and prices of the sweetener in the country.
Chairing a board meeting Food Security Minister Rana Tanvir Hussain said that formalities related to import of sugar would be completed within a few days. He added that import of sugar had become inevitable to stabilise prices.
"There is a shortage of sugar supply across the country; therefore, immediate steps have been taken to control the shortage," he said, adding that imported sugar would be brought into the market soon so that consumers could get relief.
