Musicians across generations are mourning the death of Beach Boys frontman Brian Wilson, who passed away at the age of 82. Widely regarded as a musical genius, Wilson was celebrated for his profound impact on modern music and his innovative songwriting.
Sir Paul McCartney described Wilson as a "musical genius" whose "bright shining light" left an indelible mark. “The notes he heard in his head and passed to us were simple and brilliant at the same time,” he wrote on Instagram, concluding: “God only knows how we will continue without Brian.”
Echoing this sentiment, Sir Elton John called Wilson “a true giant” with a “revolutionary” approach to songwriting. Bob Dylan noted the loss with admiration, writing that he had listened to Wilson for decades and was saddened by the news. The Velvet Underground’s John Cale emphasized that Wilson’s talents went far beyond surf music, calling him a true innovator who infused pop with “startling sophistication.”
Reflecting on his legacy, fellow Beach Boys member Al Jardine remembered Wilson as a “humble musical giant” who cared more about crafting beautiful music than receiving attention. Mick Fleetwood, Sean Ono Lennon, and Gene Simmons all underscored his transformative influence, while Randy Bachman likened Wilson to composers like Beethoven and Tchaikovsky.
Wilson, who formed The Beach Boys in the 1960s with family and friends, helped create some of the most iconic hits in pop history, including “Good Vibrations” and “God Only Knows.” He also pioneered studio techniques that shaped the landmark album Pet Sounds.
Diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1984 and dementia in 2024, Wilson’s later years were marked by health challenges. Still, his creative brilliance endured.
As fans laid flowers on the Hollywood Walk of Fame star, one truth resonated: Brian Wilson’s music taught the world how to smile—and his harmonies will echo for generations.
