An assistant professor at Islamia College University has been dismissed from service following allegations of harassment. According to a statement shared by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Higher Education Minister Meena Khan Afridi on social media, the action was taken after a student filed a formal complaint against the Islamiat lecturer.
The university’s inquiry committee conducted a thorough investigation, and based on its findings, the university syndicate confirmed the allegations and approved the dismissal.
Afridi commended the university's administration for handling the case swiftly and in accordance with the principles of justice. He noted that strict measures are being implemented to prevent harassment in universities and other educational institutions across the province.
“The zero-tolerance policy against harassment is being strictly enforced, and no leniency will be shown to any offender,” he stated.
He further emphasised that anti-harassment laws and relevant forums in K-P are fully operational and are playing an effective role in promptly addressing complaints. Legal proceedings are ongoing against individuals accused of harassment, and several offenders have already been dismissed from service.
Afridi added that universities across the province are regularly issued directives to ensure a harassment-free environment, guaranteeing a safe and conducive academic atmosphere for students and faculty alike.
“Harassment, wherever it occurs, is unacceptable and punishable,” he stressed.
The minister also referenced recent cases, stating that a perpetrator involved in a harassment case at the University of Malakand has been brought to justice, while legal action has been initiated against individuals involved in a harassment case at Women’s University Mardan.
Afridi reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to ensuring that all educational institutions provide a secure environment for academic progress. “Our goal is to establish an education atmosphere where every student and teacher can continue their academic and professional activities without fear,” he concluded.
It may be recalled that in February, the government launched an investigation into allegations of harassment against a lecturer at the University of Malakand, following public outcry on social media.
K-P Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur formed a two-member inquiry committee to probe the matter and directed it to submit a detailed report within 15 days. The committee comprised Additional Secretary of the Administration Department Asif Rahim and AIG Establishment Sonia Shamroz. The Deputy Commissioner and District Police Officer (DPO) of Lower Dir were assigned to assist with the investigation.
Police arrested Professor Abdul Haseeb, the accused lecturer, and seized his mobile phone. Authorities claimed that the device contained multiple objectionable videos of female students.
