In the wake of growing tensions at Punjab University, police have arrested five members of the student organisation Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) for allegedly threatening and attacking campus security personnel.
According to the university's spokesperson, the arrested individuals include Sohaib Fakhri, an IJT office-bearer accused of issuing death threats to a security officer.
The spokesperson reiterated that Punjab University is taking action against troublemakers without discrimination. "No leniency will be shown towards those who take the law into their own hands," he said, adding that both the administration and the police are fully aligned on enforcing campus discipline.
Tensions flared recently after the administration restricted access to several university gates as a security measure. It also launched a crackdown on illegally housed individuals in university hostels, prompting a protest by IJT activists.
The university had earlier warned the group following their demonstration. Meanwhile, an intense exchange of gunfire between two groups in Shafiqabad area spread panic among local residents. According to police, the incident stemmed from an altercation between neighbours.
