Michelle Obama, former first lady and author, shared her thoughts on mental health and personal growth during a recent appearance on "The On Purpose With Jay Shetty" podcast.

The 61-year-old revealed that she is currently in therapy to help her navigate the challenges of entering the "empty nester" phase of life. She explained that this transition has brought about new opportunities for self-reflection and adjustment, as both of her daughters, Malia (26) and Sasha (23), are now independent.

Reflecting on this life stage, Michelle shared that therapy has been vital in helping her unwind old habits and work through feelings of guilt. “I’m getting that tune-up for this next phase because I believe this is a whole ‘nother phase in life for me,” she said. “Every choice that I’m making is completely mine,” she continued, emphasizing the freedom that comes with no longer needing to prioritize her role as a hands-on mother or the president’s wife.

Michelle also highlighted her strong belief in the importance of therapy, encouraging others who can access it to do so. “I am an advocate of it,” she stated, emphasizing the value of therapy for personal growth.

During a separate interview on the "Diary of a CEO" podcast, Michelle also discussed her marriage to former president Barack Obama, asserting that their relationship is built on mutual commitment. She expressed her view that many young couples give up too quickly on marriage, urging them to seek couples therapy before making decisions to quit. Michelle noted that while their partnership has its challenges, the foundation of their relationship is rooted in resilience and shared values.

Michelle Obama continues to promote her new podcast with her brother, Craig Robinson, while navigating these personal transitions.
