A large number of lawyers reached the Defence Police Station on Friday night to register a case against the Defence Police under court orders. The police refused to register the case, prompting the lawyers to stage a protest and block traffic at the Sunset Boulevard Signal on the Korangi Road.
The protest caused a severe traffic jam, resulting in long queues of vehicles and immense difficulty for ordinary citizens. The incident stems from a previous altercation between lawyers and Defence Police over the detention of two law students.
The Defence Police Station had registered a case against named and unknown individuals for alleged vandalism and rioting at the police station on April 24. Meanwhile, the lawyers accused the police of using excessive force, firing, and injuring several people.
On Friday, the lawyers arrived with a court order to register a case under Section 22-A against the Defence police officials and others. However, when the police refused to register the case, they became agitated and blocked the road.
According to the Traffic Police spokesperson, both roads at Defence Chowk on Main Korangi Road were blocked due to the protest. The traffic police diverted vehicles through alternative routes. The police claimed that the lawyers brought a copy of the court order, but they did not receive an official directive from the court.
As of the last update at 12 am, the lawyers' protest was still ongoing.
