On April 28, 2025, over 50,000 Los Angeles County workers, represented by Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 721, initiated a two-day strike.

This action followed the expiration of their previous contract in March and was prompted by unresolved negotiations with the county.

The workers, encompassing roles such as social workers, public health professionals, custodians, and clerical staff, demanded higher wages and improved working conditions.

The strike led to disruptions across various services, including libraries, healthcare clinics, and administrative offices.

The union alleges that the county engaged in 44 labor law violations, including retaliation against union activities and contracting out union-represented positions.

In response, county officials cited a significant budget deficit, exacerbated by a $4 billion settlement for childhood sexual abuse claims and costs related to recent wildfires.

They expressed concerns about the financial sustainability of meeting the union's demands.

The strike concluded on April 30, 2025, with essential services like hospitals remaining operational, though many departments experienced delays and reduced capacity.

This labor action underscores the ongoing tensions between public sector employees advocating for fair compensation and local governments grappling with fiscal constraints.
