QUETTA/KARACHI:

Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) chief organiser Mahrang Baloch ended a hunger strike a day after the Balochistan High Court (BHC) admitted her plea for overturning her detention, her lawyer told AFP on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, BYC leader Sami Din Baloch, while speaking at a press conference at the Karachi Press Club, also confirmed that Dr Mahrang Baloch and others have called off their five-day hunger strike on the request of the lawyers and the families of other detained BYC activists.

Mahrang Baloch, 32, was arrested last month on charges of terrorism, sedition and murder. She and four other detainees had stopped eating on Thursday in protest against alleged misconduct by police and ill-treatment in detention.

On Monday, the BHC admitted for hearing her petition for overturning her detention, her lawyer Imran Baloch said. "The petition got admitted by high court and notices were issued to the government," the lawyer said, adding that a hearing was scheduled for Wednesday (today).

Sami Din Baloch told reporter that that Dr Mahrang, Bebo Baloch, Gulzadi Baloch, Sibghatullah Shahji and Bebigar Baloch had been on the hunger strike in the jail for the past five days, adding that their health was deteriorating rapidly and their condition had become very critical.

"We had serious concerns about the health of our leaders inside the jail. Therefore, yesterday (Monday), a group of families of political prisoners and senior lawyers met them in the jail and persuaded them to end the hunger strike. And they ended the hunger strike," she added. (WITH ADDITIONAL INPUT FROM AFP)
