Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday briefed PML-N President Nawaz Sharif on the decisions taken by the National Security Committee (NSC) meeting in the wake of the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) by India following a militant attack in the Pahalgam area of held Kashmir.
Shehbaz called on Nawaz at their family residence in Jati Umrah with Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also in attendance. Shehbaz briefed his elder brother regarding the decision taken by the apex body and the country's preparedness to respond to any aggression with a greater force.
The PM reportedly told his elder brother that Pahalgam was yet another false flag operation by Indians to create instability in the region. He said India's unilateral decision to suspend the IWT had heighted the risk of a war in the region.
He said Pakistan is committed to peace but the nation's security was non-negotiable.
According to a PML-N source, Nawaz Sharif wants his government to utilize all available diplomatic resources to restore peace between the two nuclear armed states. He said that Nawaz was not keen on taking an aggressive position.
Earlier in the day, Defense Minister Khawaja Asif offered India to form an international commission — including officials from the United States, Iran, China, Russia and Britain to probe into the incident, stating that if this happens, Pakistan will bring forth the facts before the world.
He said tensions between two nuclear armed states posed a risk to the stability of the entire world, underscoring the need for the international community to take stock of the rising tensions.
"Despite knowing that it was a false flag operation, we are ready to work with any such commission to close the curtains on this drama. However, India will witness our preparedness, if it goes ahead with any misadventure," he added.
