Members of the Sindh Assembly from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) have expressed deep concern and reservations over the artificial water shortage in Karachi.

In a statement issued on Friday, the MQM-P lawmakers said the frequent breakages and leakages in the city's main water supply lines, and the days-long delays in their repairs, appear to be a conspiracy involving the provincial government, the so-called city administration, and the Water Corporation, aimed at benefitting a favoured mafia.

The lawmakers said that despite Karachi contributing trillions of rupees in revenue to the national and provincial treasuries, its citizens are being deprived of basic necessities such as water.

They noted that residents are being forced to purchase water even though they pay taxes for basic services, fueling a strong perception of discrimination against the city's population.

Describing the treatment meted out to the country's economic hub as "beyond comprehension," the MQM-P representatives demanded that the Sindh government and the so-called urban administration immediately abandon their delaying tactics, ensure uninterrupted water supply to the city, and crack down on the mafias exploiting the situation.
