Liver King documentary sparks backlash as Netflix spotlights controversial influencer in untold series
Netflix is facing criticism over its upcoming documentary Untold: The Liver King, which profiles controversial fitness influencer Brian Johnson. Known as “The Liver King,” Johnson rose to online fame for promoting “ancestral living,” a lifestyle centred around intense workouts and raw meat consumption — including organ meats like liver and testicles.
Johnson built a large social media following through viral videos showcasing his muscular physique and unconventional diet. He also launched a supplement brand tied to these health ideals. However, the new documentary questions the authenticity behind his transformation and examines the wider culture of influencer-driven health trends.
Untold: The Liver King is the latest instalment in Netflix’s Untold series, which explores notable stories from the worlds of sports and wellness. Previous entries have focused on topics such as Caitlyn Jenner’s Olympic journey, the murder of NFL player Steve McNair, and a historic sailing victory by an Australian crew.
Director Joe Pearlman, who helmed the documentary, said he was intrigued by Johnson’s rapid rise. “I wanted to find out more; who he really was and what was really going on,” Pearlman told Netflix. “The truth was even crazier than I could have possibly imagined.” The film also examines the broader issue of internet virality, asking, “When shock and outrage get views, what are you willing, or even able, to keep doing to stay at the top of the algorithm?”
The trailer, released on April 22, sparked sharp reactions online. While some viewers expressed surprise or curiosity, others were critical of Netflix’s decision to give Johnson a platform. “Netflix, this might be rock bottom for you,” one commenter wrote. Another added, “I hate that Netflix gave him a platform. So sick.”
Untold: The Liver King premieres May 13 on Netflix.
