The Sindh government has decided to cancel the registration of unsafe and unfit commercial vehicles as part of a major initiative to reduce road accidents in Karachi and across the province, Express News reported.
This decision was made during a high-level meeting of the Sindh Transport and Mass Transit Department, chaired by Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, who also holds the portfolio for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit.
The meeting reviewed progress on various transport projects and discussed road safety measures in detail. One of the key decisions was to modernise the vehicle inspection system, especially for commercial vehicles operating across the province.
Under Memon’s directives, new Motor Vehicle Inspection (MVI) Centres will be established on major entry points such as the National Highway and Super Highway to ensure vehicle fitness before entering Karachi. Currently, two MVI centers are operational in Karachi, and work is underway to complete more.
“In total, ten MVI centers will be established across Sindh,” said Memon. “Three more in Karachi and five in other districts are in the pipeline. These centers will help verify vehicle fitness and ensure safer roads.”
He further announced that by June, Karachi will receive 34 new electric buses and five double-decker buses, followed by an additional 100 buses. The minister also directed relevant departments to take initial steps for launching 500 electric taxis in the city.
“Our goal is to provide affordable, eco-friendly, and reliable transport options to the public,” Memon stated. “Sindh’s transport system is entering a new era of modernization and public convenience.”
He stressed that the Sindh government is committed to upgrading the transport sector with modern technology, safety standards, and inclusive access for all citizens.
