A speeding vehicle rammed into two pedestrians after breaching a green belt near Maskan Chowrangi in Karachi's Gulshan-e-Iqbal area late Sunday night, killing one man and seriously injuring another, police and rescue officials confirmed, Express News reported.
According to police, the vehicle was travelling at high speed from Disco Bakery towards Maskan Chowrangi when the driver lost control and veered across the median strip, striking two men who were seated outside a roadside hotel.
The deceased was identified as 42-year-old Saleem, who sustained fatal head and chest injuries. The injured man, Zeeshan, was rushed to a nearby hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
The incident caused chaos in the area, with enraged bystanders surrounding the vehicle and setting it on fire. By the time police arrived, the SUV was engulfed in flames. The fire brigade later extinguished the blaze.
A police spokesperson from District East confirmed that three individuals from the vehicle, including the driver, have been taken into custody for questioning. "Initial investigations suggest the accident occurred due to speeding. The vehicle jumped the green belt and hit two people sitting on chairs outside a hotel," SHO Gulshan-e-Iqbal Naeem Rajput said.
In a related development, three men suspected of setting the vehicle on fire have also been detained, police added.
Chhipa Welfare spokesperson Chaudhry Shahid stated that the deceased suffered severe injuries to the head and ribs. According to Chhipa authorities, this fatality brings the number of deaths in road accidents in Karachi so far this year to 266.
Police say an investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash and whether any charges will be filed.
