4.1 magnitude earthquake strikes northern Pakistan
Tremors were felt across parts of northern Pakistan on Sunday afternoon as a magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck with its epicentre in the Hindu Kush region of neighbouring Afghanistan, the Pakistan Meteorological Department said.
The quake occurred at 2:50 p.m. local time and was recorded at a depth of 60 kilometres beneath the earth’s surface.
Although the tremors caused brief panic in several areas, there were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage. Residents in Islamabad and surrounding regions rushed out of buildings, reciting prayers as a precautionary response.
Authorities confirmed that the epicentre was located in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush mountain range, a seismically active region known for triggering low to moderate intensity earthquakes in Pakistan.
Disaster response agencies said they are monitoring the situation, but no emergency action was deemed necessary at this stage.
Yesterday, a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck parts of Pakistan with tremors felt in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and several districts across Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provinces, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
The National Seismic Monitoring Centre reported the epicentre was located approximately 60 kilometres northwest of Rawalpindi, at a depth of 12 kilometres.
The tremors were recorded at 12:31 pm local time.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab confirmed that the earthquake was also felt in Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujrat, and other areas of the province.
