LAHORE:

The Judicial Water and Environment Commission has proposed to the Lahore High Court (LHC) that prayer leaders (imams) of mosques be included in public awareness campaigns aimed at preventing water wastage.

The suggestion was presented during a hearing presided over by Justice Shahid Karim on multiple petitions related to controlling smog, reducing pollution, and conserving groundwater.

Justice Karim endorsed the proposal, remarking that preventing water wastage is a shared responsibility and that Islam itself encourages the responsible use of water.

During the proceedings, the court also barred the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) from approving the construction of houses larger than one kanal unless water treatment plants are included in the building plans.

Justice Karim observed that LDA must enforce its existing regulations in this regard.

Several reports were submitted to the court during the hearing.

Addressing the issue of Tollinton Market, Justice Karim ordered that animals should no longer be brought into the market, adding that a separate space must be designated for livestock trading.

He also appreciated the ongoing efforts to promote sports in the city's sports complex.

The hearing was adjourned until April 16 for further proceedings.

LHC dismisses bail plea in Rs8m embezzlement case

In a separate development, Justice Tanveer Ahmad Sheikh of the Lahore High Court rejected the post-arrest bail plea of Shaukat Babar, an accused in the alleged embezzlement of Rs8 million from the Dr Abdul Qadeer Trust Hospital.

The defense counsel argued that Babar was falsely implicated to blackmail and defame him, asserting there was no concrete evidence linking him to the crime.
