Drinking water is being sold in Deepalpur in hazardous containers that are typically used for harmful chemicals, posing serious risks to the health of residents.
According to residents, the groundwater in areas surrounding the town is saline, because of which they face difficulty in accessing fresh drinking water.
With the arrival of summer, the demand for drinking water has increased.
However, the water is being sold in drums that are harmful to health because of earlier use for chemicals, including acids. The water is supplied in the hazardous containers from rickshaws and donkey carts in the streets and markets.
A local resident, Malik Asghar Noorani, said while speaking to The Express Tribune that exposure of the containers to sunlight causes chemical reactions, making the water more dangerous and leading to the spread of diseases.
Another resident, Imran Mahar, said the authorities should ensure that water is only sold in approved containers and bottles and strict legal action should be taken against those violating the health standards.
