The coastal settlement of Ibrahim Hyderi is grappling with a growing environmental crisis, as untreated waste and polluted water from buffalo pens and nearby industries continue to flow unchecked into the sea. This pollution is severely harming marine life and threatening the livelihoods of the fishing community, with no concrete solutions in sight.
The fishing industry is being severely impacted by the polluted water, which is contaminated with dung and toxic chemicals. In coastal settlements such as Ibrahim Hyderi, Rehri Goth, Chashma Goth, and several other areas in the city, the water mixed with dung from buffalo pens and polluted water from leather dyeing industries and other factories continues to flow into the sea without being addressed.
According to Coastal Media Centre spokesperson Kamal Shah, polluted water from hundreds of cattle farms in the Cattle Colony and various factories near the coast is being discharged into the sea without treatment, causing continuous marine pollution. Several complaints have been made to the relevant authorities, but no significant action has been taken.
The discharge of this polluted water into the sea has had a devastating impact on the fishing industry, with dead fish being washed ashore. Due to the toxic chemicals and contaminated water, fishermen are losing their livelihoods. They have urgently appealed for action to address these issues in order to prevent further large-scale fish deaths.
According to the Coastal Media Centre, fish and shrimp species are already at risk of extinction due to the indiscriminate cutting of mangroves. In this context, the continuous flow of buffalo dung and chemical-contaminated water from factories into the sea is exacerbating the problem.
