The Rawalpindi District Education Authority has officially cancelled second shifts in all government schools that were running evening classes over the past four years.
Approximately 50 schools across the district are affected by this decision. A formal notification has been issued by the chief executive officer of the education authority.
According to the notification, only six schools are exempt from this directive. These schools include Government Modern Boys High School No 2 Rawalpindi, Government Public Academy Secondary School Tench Bhata, Government Boys High School Chungi No 22, afternoon schools, educational programs, and community schools.
These institutions will continue their second shifts as usual.
The notification has been implemented with immediate effect.
Starting Monday, April 7, all second-shift schools, except the exempted ones, will be closed. Students enrolled in these shifts are being advised to transfer to alternative schools.
Temporary teachers in these second shifts have been dismissed, while regular teachers will now only work in the first shift.
Teacher unions have condemned the move. Shafiq Bhalowalia, Central Secretary of the Punjab SES Teachers Association, demanded the withdrawal of the decision.
Parents have also expressed concern, particularly regarding the education of their daughters.
Muhammad Niaz, a resident, said that girls previously attended nearby schools during the second shift, but now families may be unable to send them to schools located far away.
