Gujarat Titans(GT) continued their impressive form in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), securing a dominant seven-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad(SRH) on Sunday at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.
Chasing a modest target of 153, Gujarat Titans reached the mark in 16.4 overs, losing three wickets in the process. Despite a shaky start with early wickets, captain Shubman Gill (61* off 43) and Washington Sundar (49 off 29) starred with the bat to take Gujarat to their third consecutive win.
Hyderabad’s decision to bat first saw them restricted to 152/8 in their 20 overs, thanks to a stunning bowling performance from Mohammed Siraj, who claimed his best-ever IPL figures of 4/17.
The chase got off to a rocky start for Gujarat as the opening bowlers, Mohammed Shami and Pat Cummins, kept the pressure on early.
Shami dismissed the in-form Sai Sudharsan (5 off 9) before Cummins trapped Jos Buttler (0 off 3) with a superb delivery, leaving Gujarat at 16/2 in the fourth over.
However, Gill and Sundar counter-attacked with composure, adding a match-changing 90 runs for the third wicket in just 56 balls. Gill brought up his fifty off 36 balls, while Sundar showcased his aggressive intent, striking some eye-catching shots.
Sundar was dismissed for 49 off 29 balls after a stunning catch by Aniket Verma in the deep, with the Gujarat camp expressing their frustration over the umpire’s call.
With the target firmly in sight, Sherfane Rutherford came in as the impact player and blasted 35* off 16 balls, including six boundaries and a six, to seal the win. Gujarat crossed the finish line in the 17th over, chasing the target with ease.
Earlier, Hyderabad’s innings faltered despite an early flourish from Travis Head, who hit a couple of boundaries off Siraj. However, the pacer made an immediate impact, dismissing Head (8 off 5) caught at short mid-wicket.
Abhishek Sharma (18 off 16) and Ishan Kishan (17 off 14) failed to provide significant contributions, leaving Hyderabad at 49/3 in the eighth over.
Heinrich Klaasen (27 off 19) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (31 off 34) then tried to stabilize the innings, adding a crucial 50-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
However, R Sai Kishore (2/24) and Siraj continued to chip away at the wickets, with Kishore dismissing both Reddy and Klaasen.
Prasidh Krishna (2/25) finished off the lower order, while Siraj returned to claim the final two wickets, completing his four-wicket haul. Despite some late hitting from Pat Cummins (22* off 9) and Shami (6* off 2), Hyderabad could only post 152/8 in their 20 overs.
With the win, Gujarat climbed to second place on the points table with six points from four matches, while Hyderabad languished at the bottom with just two points from five games.
