QUETTA:

The provincial government of Balochistan has advised the BNP to limit its protest today to Quetta's Shahwani Stadium, warning that strict legal action will be taken against any violations of the law, if the party supporters march into the provincial capital's red zone.

Sardar Akhtar Mengal, who is personally leading the BNP's long march, has vowed to reach Quetta on April 6 (Sunday) to protest against the alleged enforced disappearances of political workers in Balochistan and the arrest of Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) leaders including Dr Mahrang Baloch.

Addressing a press conference ahead of the scheduled protest, Balochistan government spokesperson Shahid Rind on Friday said strict legal action would be taken against any violations of the law.

"The government is showing restraint, but any attempt to breach Section 144 or provoke unrest will be met with a firm response," Rind said.

He accused BNP chief Mengal and senior leader Dr Sabeen of delivering speeches "against the state" and confirmed that legal proceedings would be initiated over such remarks.

Rind revealed that two rounds of talks had taken place with the BNP leadership, during which they were asked to hold their protest at Shahwani Stadium. However, the party refused, insisting on marching to Quetta's red zone, which the government has declared off-limits.

"The BNP-M placed three major demands, including the release of Mahrang Baloch," he said.

Rind dismissed speculations about the government's alleged negotiation with the BYC, stating that no official meeting between the government and Dr Mahrang Baloch had occurred in jail. "Everyone knows what the BYC is," he added.

He stated that the provincial government is awaiting a detailed verdict from the Balochistan High Court on the Afghan refugee issue and continues to consult with political parties to ensure law and order.

The BNP march, which has gained momentum across various districts, continues despite the government's repeated warnings and failed negotiation attempts.
