The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) has decided to cancel comedian Amber Ruffin’s scheduled performance at its annual dinner on April 26, opting instead to shift the focus toward journalism and scholarship.
WHCA President Eugene Daniels announced the decision, stating, “The WHCA board has unanimously decided we are no longer featuring a comedic performance this year. At this consequential moment for journalism, I want to ensure the focus is not on the politics of division but entirely on awarding our colleagues for their outstanding work and providing scholarship and mentorship to the next generation of journalists.”
The cancellation follows Ruffin’s previous remarks on CNN, where she suggested that “no one” wanted former President Donald Trump to attend the dinner. Trump has since confirmed that he will not be present at the event.
Ruffin’s participation was initially announced on February 4, with Daniels praising her as an ideal choice for the occasion. However, the WHCA has now chosen to forgo its traditional comedic segment, emphasizing the importance of celebrating journalism instead.
The WHCA dinner, a long-standing tradition, typically includes a high-profile comedian. The decision to cancel this year’s performance underscores a shift in priorities amid ongoing political tensions and media challenges.
